Ingredient Spotlight: Huperzine A

In the Ingredient Spotlight series, we have looked at quite a few impressive ingredients. Nootropics definitely fall into that category. In fact, they are among the hottest compounds on the market. Within that category, Huperzine A is a superstar ingredient that you will find in the best pre-workouts and nootropic formulas - and of course 5% Nutrition leads the way! In this article, we’ll take a closer look at what it is and what it does, and show what 5% Nutrition products you can find it in.

What Is Huperzine A?

Huperzine A is an alkaloid that is isolated from the toothed clubmoss plant of the species Huperzia serrata. This plant has a long history of use in Chinese herbal medicine.(1)

What Does Huperzine A Do?

Huperzine A may improve memory and learning by blocking the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, also known as the “learning neurotransmitter.” It also acts as a neuroprotectant, and may enhance overall cognition. Huperzine A is water-soluble and easily crosses the blood-brain barrier. It’s quickly transported throughout the various regions of the brain, taking about an hour to take full effect.(2,3)

The Accepted Dose Of Huperzine A

There are no standard dosing guidelines for this nootropic, but the suggested dose ranges from 50 to 200 mcg per day. You will often see it as a standardized extract of toothed clubmoss. For example, looking at the label of Kill It RTD, you will see 10 mg of toothed clubmoss standardized to 1% Huperzine A. This means it contains 100 mcg of Huperzine A. (2)
